Background

The Halal Assurance Law No. 33 of 2014, supported by Government Regulation No. 31 of 2019 and the Regulation of the Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia No. 26 of 2019 concerning the implementation of halal product assurance, mandates that all food products circulating in Indonesia must be halal-certified. As the largest university in Eastern Indonesia, Hasanuddin University strongly supports the government’s efforts to ensure that all food products in Indonesia are certified halal. This aligns with Hasanuddin University’s vision and mission as a center of excellence in the development of human resources, science, technology, arts, and culture based on the Indonesian maritime continent

The establishment of the Halal Inspection Institution at Hasanuddin University is one of the university’s initiatives to support the government in ensuring halal-certified food products. According to Government Regulation No. 31 of 2019, Article 30, Paragraph 1, the government may establish an LPH (Halal Inspection Institution). Furthermore, Article 31, Paragraph 1 states that an LPH established by the government, as referred to in Article 30, Paragraph 1, may also be established by a university. Additionally, Article 31, Paragraph 3 explains that an LPH established by a university, as mentioned in Paragraph 1, is part of the field of research and community service.

The naming of the Halal Inspection Institution at Hasanuddin University refers to internal regulations agreed upon within the university, which stipulate that there are only two institutions within Hasanuddin University: the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) and the Institute for Quality Assurance and Educational Development (LPMPP). Therefore, the establishment of the Halal Inspection Institution was changed to the Halal Inspection Center based on mutual agreement, without altering its functions and duties in accordance with the law.
